Moving Tips: Leaving Your House VacantBy Creekmore Marketing
Whether you are moving across the country, across the state, down the road, or even just leaving for your seasonal vacation, this is an exciting time for you. While checking off your to-do lists to make sure you can be without your house for a while, make sure your house can also be without you. Leaving a house vacant for extended periods of times can bring some worries, so here are some moving tips on how best to prep your house for vacancy while you’re away.
- Clean your house. Not only will this keep unwanted pests away, it’ll also deter any unpleasant odors. Start by completely cleaning and unplugging your refrigerator. Then clean any surfaces with water (sinks, toilets, etc.) to prevent mold. Cover your furniture throughout the house with sheets and blankets to keep dust away. Pack up all essential items that you need to bring. Any items that you aren’t taking with you can be put in storage.
- Protect your house. If you have an alarm system, make sure that it is functioning properly. If you don’t have one, look into the benefits of purchasing one. Double check that every door and window is locked before you leave. Importantly, store your valuables that aren’t making the trip with you in a secure location. You can also protect your house from water damage by turning off your water supply. If you can’t turn off the water supply completely, keep the furnace on so that the water doesn’t freeze and burst your pipes.
- Make your house seem occupied. Cancel your news delivery while you’re gone and forward your mail to your new address. Or, you can instead ask a trusted friend or family member to check in on the house every few days. You can also install motion-sensitive exterior lights to deter thieves or unwanted guests from your house.
- Place Charcoal in your rooms. Placing charcoal in a tin pie pan or other container will prevent the smells that often appear when leaving your house vacant.
