Helpful Tips for DownsizingBy Michel Bayard
If you are tired of a large house or an excessive amount of possessions, downsizing is the perfect solution. Switching to a residence with less space can be a fun opportunity to part with items you no longer need. Here are some tips to ease the process of downsizing.
The first thing to do is start planning for your downsizing and set objectives. This is especially helpful for couples and families, as this ensures everyone is on the same page. When everyone is working towards the same goal, conflicts are eliminated and no one’s feelings can possibly be hurt. Separate your belongings into different groups depending on if you would be heartbroken to lose them or if they are replaceable to you. Once you have your possessions categorized, it should make the entire procedure run smoother.
When downsizing, it is important to focus on quality rather than quantity. It is better to have one statement piece instead of several smaller objects, for instance. Trying to squeeze too many belongings into an area can make the room appear crowded and feel smaller. To achieve optimal space utilization, purchase items that can perform various tasks, such as an ottoman that has storage space built-in or nightstands with drawers that open and close. Make sure to also select furnishings with durable fabrics, as compact spaces often necessitate rooms serving dual purposes and thus, the furniture experiences additional usage.
Another tip is to stop planning for hypothetical situations wherein you would require the items. In smaller spaces, you should have a “use it or lose it” mindset. Do not collect goods for the off chance you may eventually need them. If you have no immediate use for it, it is time to part ways with it. When downsizing, you also lose the storage capacity to keep duplicates of items. While it may be convenient to have backups, they also take up room that could serve a direct purpose.
If you are not looking forward to downsizing, it can be beneficial to alter your perspective. Keep in mind the positives that a smaller home brings, including easier upkeep, reduced maintenance costs, and less pressure to play host. Less square footage and fewer belongings will make it harder to lose things as well. While it can be sad to say goodbye to some of your items, it is best to look on the bright side of things.
